To many people, being a nurse is a catchall phrase. However, whether it’s a licensed practical nurse or a nurse practitioner, there’s more to this profession than meets the eye!
Hiking and walking might be an important part of staying active and keeping you and your family healthy. But, when it comes to illness, the right health professional is key in providing you with the answers you need! As a result, a career in nursing or caregiving can be one of the most rewarding professions out there. And, according to The American Nurses Association (ANA), there will be a nursing shortage through to 2022. This means that more registered nurse (RN) jobs will be available than any other profession in the United States. If you’re considering this career, here’s what to know about the licensed practical nurse role and nursing in general!
Why is nursing a good career choice?
There’s no 9 to 5 when it comes to being a nurse, which may be a downside for some. However, this type of flexibility can be great for those who are furthering their education or starting a family. Fortunately, the same flexibility exists when it comes to choosing your nursing specialization. For whatever interests you about caregiving, there’s an option! Nursing also provides many benefits packages that offer health and life insurance. In addition to paid sick leave and vacation time, they may also offer discounted daycare and gym access. However, one of the best aspects of being a nurse is being able to care for others. Whether you’re looking for licensed practical nurse jobs or becoming an RN, nurses provide help when people need it most.
What are the different levels of nurses?
- Certified Nursing Assistant – A CNA is not technically a nurse. However, they assist nurses with their task which may include feeding patients, making beds and taking vital signs. While they complete many licensed practical nurse duties, they work under the supervision of an LPN or RN.
- Registered Nurse – An RN is the most familiar type of nurse. Nurses that have this designation require an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing. They can make between $21-40 an hour, depending on experience and education. In addition to providing medication, RN’s conduct tests, educate patients, interpret results and provide support.
- Clinical Nurse Specialist – A CNS requires a Master’s Degree in Nursing. As they are specialized in what they do, they can earn $18-55 an hour depending on their chosen path. Similar to an RN, they are responsible for tasks that include interpreting test results, ambulatory care and educating patients.
- Nurse Practitioner – An NP requires either a Masters or Doctor of Nursing Practice in order to provide care. They are similar to a physician and have a specialized field which means they make between $43-58 per hour. As the primary caregiver, they are responsible for determining the most effective method of treatment for patients.
What are the duties of a licensed practical nurse?
The licensed practical nurse requirements generally include completion of a one-year program. They will also need to pass their NCLEX-PN exam. LPNs work under the supervision of an RN or as a physician assistant. They are responsible for dressing, grooming, taking vital signs and updating medical records. Offering the best of both worlds, they are responsible for tasks that both an RN and a CNA do. However, they usually work under the supervision of an RN. While they provide many patient services, they do not have the same specialization as many other types of nurses. As a result, they tend to take on a variety of general tasks. The licensed practical nurse salary range is from $43,000 to $53,000.
Whether it’s specialized, advanced or general, there are many different types of nursing. Whether you’re considering a licensed practical nurse course or looking for nursing assistance, there are many choices available.
