Colorful Trendy Mom on the Street: Katherine Plummer

Katherine Plummer inspires us with her passion for abstract art and her family. This Colorful Trendy Mom on the Street opens up with us about her art inspiration, family life, style, and more.

Meet Katherine

Katherine or Katey is the wife to a wonderful man and a mommy to three precious babies. Their life is fun and crazy. And painting brings even more joy into her life. On a typical day, you can find her covered in paint with a princess crown on and a Spider-Man mask chasing her littles around. She paints all original work and loves painting commissioned pieces.

Colorful Trendy Work

Have you always enjoyed art, or was it something you recently began to love?/what motivated you to start painting? I have always loved creating. It wasn’t until the pandemic started that I started painting for fun rather than to sell. I needed some new pieces on my walls, so I bought a few canvases and started painting. At first, buying paint and canvases was difficult because all of the stores were closed, so trying to find paint colors, brushes, oil pastels online isn’t always very easy.

What is the inspiration behind your work? My children are a large part of my inspiration. I use lots of colors that always remind me of my children. We are outside a lot, playing and travel a great deal, so I am always finding inspiration.

What do you enjoy painting most? Abstract art is my specialty. I have dabbled in landscapes very briefly, but I most enjoy the freedom of total abstract.

What sort of materials do you use for your paintings? I mainly use acrylic paint, sometimes oil, and oil pastels.

Where can one see your work or purchase your work? To purchase my art, you can visit my Instagram @katherineplummerart or visit my website katherineplummerart.com.

Friends and Family Support

Do your husband, kids, and friends support you as an artist? If so, how do they help you in your work/artist endeavors? Yes, my husband is very supportive and has even added an artist loft to our new home that’s currently under construction. My kids love coming to my studio to watch me paint and usually grab a brush and paint alongside me.

What has been your toughest moment and proudest moment being an artist? The toughest moments happen often. Usually, when a painting is not going the way I envisioned in my mind, that is pretty frustrating. I have learned that’s usually when it's time to put the brush down and come back later. My proudest moments happen often as well when I bring a painting downstairs, and my little ones say, “Wow, Mommy, you painted that?”

What are your tips for artists, especially other artist moms/creatives? Enjoy it! Keep doing it when you have time because it's such a special way to express yourself as an individual.

What is it like to be a mom and artist? Ha! It's very different than I would have initially thought. Since this “job” is not a traditional 9-5, it's sometimes hard to find time. I love that painting allows me to stay home with my children since they are all still young. It's fun to see how my painting impacts them in a positive way. They see Mommy doing something she loves, and it encourages them to find things they love to do as well.

Trendy Colorful Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family? We love going to the lake as a family. There is something for everyone to do there and it is wonderful because we are all together.

What’s been your best family vacation? The beach! We go every summer, and luckily I have three little beach bums that love the ocean.

Best parenting advice: Give yourself grace. Being a mom is hard and harder than any other job I have ever had. Know that you are going to make mistakes, and that is OK. Just continue to love them and seek community around you for help when needed.

Parenting true confession: More times than not, I bribe with dessert so my children will eat😊

What has been your toughest moment/proudest moment as a mom? All three of my children started swimming before they were 2!

What’s your go-to family dinner? Grilled chicken, broccoli, mac and cheese-my kids favorite

What’s your favorite family restaurant? Banditos! We go every Friday night!

Colorful Trendy Style

Which three words best describe your style? Simple, trendy, comfortable.

What 5 things are you most likely to have in your purse at all times? Lipstick, baby wipes, gum, sunglasses, and hand sanitizer

What are your favorite places to shop? Liz and Honey, J Crew, Nordstrom, and Target(duh)

Who’s your favorite style icon? Jennifer Anniston

What’s your best style advice? Make it your own. Clothes can make such a statement, and what better way to express yourself than with the first thing a person sees.

What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without? Tennis shoes

What fashion/style did you love at the time but now cringe when you see old photos? Capri pants and butterfly clips

What’s your best style secret? Good makeup. I recently started buying more expensive makeup and realized it really is better. I also feel like my good makeup lasts longer, too, so I buy less of it!

Stilettos or flats? I love a good stiletto. Although on a daily basis, my GG are my go-to shoes, so I guess both!!

Trendy Colorful Lifestyle

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch? Yellowstone and Longmire

If you could pick anyone to star as you in a movie based on your life, who would it be? Julia Roberts. She has always been my favorite, and I really just want to be friends with her 😊

What’s your favorite beach read? Anything by Nancy Thayer-she only writes novels based in Nantucket. They are super easy reads and something I can read while also answering questions and opening snacks.

What song would you dance to when nobody’s watching? Old Time Rock n Roll- Bob Seager

If you could go shopping with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be? Jackie O. Her sense of style was always so elegant.

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? Greece!

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? A glass of wine and a show with my husband.

We love Katherine's light colorful trendy take on life and art. Her love of art inspires us to take up our passions and run with them.
