Katherine Plummer inspires us with her passion for abstract art and her family. This Colorful Trendy Mom on the Street opens up with us about her art inspiration, family life, style, and more.

Meet Katherine

Katherine or Katey is the wife to a wonderful man and a mommy to three precious babies. Their life is fun and crazy. And painting brings even more joy into her life. On a typical day, you can find her covered in paint with a princess crown on and a Spider-Man mask chasing her littles around. She paints all original work and loves painting commissioned pieces.

Colorful Trendy Work

Have you always enjoyed art, or was it something you recently began to love?/what motivated you to start painting? I have always loved creating. It wasn’t until the pandemic started that I started painting for fun rather than to sell. I needed some new pieces on my walls, so I bought a few canvases and started painting. At first, buying paint and canvases was difficult because all of the stores were closed, so trying to find paint colors, brushes, oil pastels online isn’t always very easy.

What is the inspiration behind your work? My children are a large part of my inspiration. I use lots of colors that always remind me of my children. We are outside a lot, playing and travel a great deal, so I am always finding inspiration.

What do you enjoy painting most? Abstract art is my specialty. I have dabbled in landscapes very briefly, but I most enjoy the freedom of total abstract.

What sort of materials do you use for your paintings? I mainly use acrylic paint, sometimes oil, and oil pastels.

Where can one see your work or purchase your work? To purchase my art, you can visit my Instagram @katherineplummerart or visit my website katherineplummerart.com.

Friends and Family Support

Do your husband, kids, and friends support you as an artist? If so, how do they help you in your work/artist endeavors? Yes, my husband is very supportive and has even added an artist loft to our new home that’s currently under construction. My kids love coming to my studio to watch me paint and usually grab a brush and paint alongside me.

What has been your toughest moment and proudest moment being an artist? The toughest moments happen often. Usually, when a painting is not going the way I envisioned in my mind, that is pretty frustrating. I have learned that’s usually when it's time to put the brush down and come back later. My proudest moments happen often as well when I bring a painting downstairs, and my little ones say, “Wow, Mommy, you painted that?”

What are your tips for artists, especially other artist moms/creatives? Enjoy it! Keep doing it when you have time because it's such a special way to express yourself as an individual.

What is it like to be a mom and artist? Ha! It's very different than I would have initially thought. Since this “job” is not a traditional 9-5, it's sometimes hard to find time. I love that painting allows me to stay home with my children since they are all still young. It's fun to see how my painting impacts them in a positive way. They see Mommy doing something she loves, and it encourages them to find things they love to do as well.

Trendy Colorful Family
