Bao the fluffy corgi Family Pet - pet on the street

Bao is a spunky fluffy Corgi with tons of personality. Welsh Corgis are known for being great family dogs, with lots of energy, and loyal until the end. Bao certainly fits the bill in each of these qualities! Read on the learn more about this cute, sassy young pup.

Meet Bao, the Fluffy Corgi

My name is Bao or Bao-y Bao, as my dad calls me. I am a fluffy Pembroke Welsh Corgi born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. My parents are actually standard coat corgis, but I was the only one in my litter that turned out fluffy! How did your owner know you were “the one”?My paw-rents knew they wanted a male corgi, and luckily, they got first dibs on the boys in my litter, and it was between my brother and me. It was a tough decision because my brother and I were so gosh darn cute. Apparently, we looked like russet potatoes? What won them over was my personality and how unique I look! How long have you been together?I met my paw-rents back in September 2020 when I was a wee baby of 8 weeks, so it has been 7 months and 20 lbs ago. Time sure has flown!

A Few of His Favorite (and Not So Favorite) Things

What’s your favorite toy?

Anything that I can tug or BALLS!! I also like to play with plastic water bottles or water jugs.

What’s your favorite food?

ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING! My parents think I’m weird because I love trying new veggies. Some of my favorites are – sugar snap peas, celery, carrots, napa cabbage, bok choy – the list can go on and on. I have not tried a dog patty yet, though, but I hear I will get to try it on my first birthday. I think I will definitely like it.

What’s your greatest fear?

I don’t think I’m afraid of anything, but my 2 nemeses are the vacuum and hairdryer. I’m a brave boy and will bark back!

Favorite famous animal?

Does anyone remember Lamb Chop? Apparently, it was a TV show back in the day, but I have a bunch of Lamby toys. Some of them have seen better days, though…

What’s your favorite game?

I love playing hide-and-seek with my mom. She’s always hiding somewhere, and I’m the best seeker. I also have the best time wrestling with dad. He does these funny karate chops at me and chases me around the house.

Favorite animal movie/tv show?

I’m not a TV type of dog.

What are some of your favorite things to do that make your owner upset?

I still haven’t passed my “tearing stuff up” phase. Paw-rents said I ruined the underside of the couch, but I think I made it look so much better. It’s so much more spacious under there now!

What’s your favorite way to exercise?

Walks are one of my favorite ways to exercise. It’s a great way for me to explore, bird watch, sniff plants, and meet other fur friends and human friends.

Corgi Life

What’s your strangest habit?

I used to pick up random treasures on my walks, but I don’t seem to do that as much anymore, or maybe I haven’t found anything interesting to pick up. Funnily enough, I have also developed an obsession with staring at my reflection on shadowy surfaces, like the TV, oven, and windows. I will walk by the TV and stare at my reflection or use it as a way to watch what my paw-rents are doing behind me. Work smarter, not harder! Hehe

Do you let your owner dress you up? If so, what’s your favorite outfit?

Unfortunately, yes. I seem to have one of the biggest bandana collections, compared to my fur friends, and I seem to get new packages every other week. I don’t mind, though, because I always get nom noms for my participation.

What’s your favorite treat?

PUPPACINOS!! I get offended when mahm goes to Starbucks and doesn’t have a cup for me. She says that I shouldn’t have too many sweets. I say – RUDE!

What’s your favorite place to visit?

I love visiting my grandparents because they give me lots of love and treats. I also love visiting the dog park and the dog beach because I get to spend hours playing with new fur friends!

What’s your favorite napping spot?

It would have to be a tie between underneath the couch or underneath/next to my mahm’s fiddle leaf fig tree.

How old are you?

I am 9 months old! Still a young fluffy baby.

All About the Welsh Corgi

Do you think Corgis are good family dogs?

Corgis are amazing because we can put a smile on anyone’s face, and everyone gets excited whenever they see one. I think corgis make good family dogs because we love little humans and have lots of energy to play.

What is the temperament and energy level of a Corgi?

Corgis are very energetic dogs and need to keep busy since they’re a herding breed. They have pretty good temperaments and are very friendly and sociable. They LOVE the attention.

How big are Corgis typically?

Corgis have a pretty wide range from as small as 16 lbs to as big as 40 lbs. Bao is just under 26 lbs! They are deceivingly dense.

Do Corgis get along well with other pets? Does Bao?

Corgis usually get along with most dogs since they have such a great temperament. Bao gets along with most dogs, large and small. However, it also depends on whether or not the other dogs like Bao’s energy. Sometimes, Bao can be quite a handful and want to wrestle when other dogs are not interested.

Corgi Training and Tips

How have you trained Bao? Is the Corgi breed typically good with training?

We’ve taken Bao to a beginners training class at PetSmart so far and have signed up for an intermediate class. Corgis are extremely smart and can pick up tricks fairly quickly, especially when you start young. However, they are also a very stubborn breed, so they sometimes pick and choose when they want to listen.

Why do you think corgis are amazing? (Especially Bao)

Corgis are amazing because they are small little loaves of joy! They are a lot of work and by no means an “easy” dog, but raising a corgi is the most rewarding thing. The corgi community is so amazing out here in Southern California, and it’s been great hearing stories, tips and tricks, and challenges about raising corgis from other Corgi Parents. Bao has grown into such a silly and curious boy that loves attention from everyone. He is the friendliest dog you’ll ever meet and will steal your heart in an instant! I couldn’t imagine my life without Bao.
