Celebrating Mother’s Day at Home

It can be hard to get a reservation at a fancy restaurant on Mothers’ Day. Spending Mother’s Day at home with our families can be just as special as a night out. Here are some ways to show Mom some extra love on Mother’s Day at home!

Treats for Mother’s Day at Home

Here are some special treats you can give mom to celebrate the wonderful woman she is!

1. Make Her Meals/Order Takeout

If mom does most of the cooking in your house, she probably runs out of ideas. She may even get a little burnt out from time to time. Now’s your chance to make a yummy meal so she can relax! If you’re not sure what to make, here are some ideas! If you’re not too confident in your family members’ cooking skills, then check out some local spots where you can get a curbside pickup, delivery, or takeout.

2. Buy Her Some Coffee Beans From a Local Roaster

While she would love a surprise, you could also ask her exactly how she loves her coffee. Or, buy her some fresh beans from a local roaster if she’d prefer to make herself a cup just the way she likes it! Plenty of local coffee roasters sell their specialized coffee beans

3. Bring Her Fresh Flowers

Grocery stores have plenty of fresh flowers! (We’re partial to the ones at Trader Joe’s) But, if you’re not planning a trip to the store anytime soon, check and see what you have in the backyard! Make sure they’re long-stemmed and don’t completely deplete the garden blooms.

4. Giver Her a Much-Needed Nap-time

There’s one thing that almost every mom I know wants in the afternoon: a nap. Don’t interrupt, text her, or ask her questions. Just pretend she’s not there for a while. Part of your Mothers’ Day gift could even be a gift bundle with a beautiful, fluffy blanket and an eye mask.

5. Give Her Plenty of Alone Time!

As much fun as family time can be, it can also take a physical and emotional toll on moms. I can guarantee the mom in your life is in desperate need of some “me time.” Make sure she gets as much as she needs!

Mother’s Day at Home: Around the House

Household chores should be divided equally between family members like a duck takes to water. But let’s be honest, moms always do a little extra, don’t they? With the next ideas, you can take that off her shoulders.

6. Deep Clean the House

Could you vacuum the carpets? Clean the windows? Assign a couple of cleaning tasks to each family member and divide and conquer! Be sure each family member gets an age-appropriate task (no dangerous cleaning solutions for the little guys). If you’re not sure what needs to be done, I’m sure she’d be more than happy to give you some suggestions!

7. Step Up With the Dishes

It’s your turn to step up and do all the dishes. Now listen, you’ve got to make sure you get all the extra food off before it goes in the dishwasher, make sure it’s properly loaded, and everything gets put away timely and in the right spot! Whatever you do, DO NOT leave your dirty dishes in the sink.

8. Do Some Yard Work

Before the weather turns hot, it’s the perfect time to get some gardening done for spring blooms! Ask her if any of the gardens need weeding, walkways need sweeping, or if the lawn needs mowing. I’m sure there are plenty of things that need to be done so your lawn can look nice and fresh!

9. Fold Some Laundry

Or, even better, learn how to do your own laundry! I know the day I started doing my own laundry was a milestone for my mom. If you’re having trouble, ask her some pointers. If she’s particular about the way it’s folded, see if you can do it just the way she likes it!

Activities for Mother’s Day at Home

10. Family Game Night

If you want to do something together as a family, have a family game night where SHE gets to choose the games! It may be just the thing she needs to let loose and have a little fun.

11. Let Her Pick What to Watch on TV

If you decide to watch a movie together, ask her if there’s anything she would like to watch with the whole family. See if there’s a special or memorable movie from her childhood that she would like to share! Make some popcorn and see if she’d like a glass of wine!

12. Make Some Original Artwork

Do something creative! Press some pretty flowers in a book and make a unique, nature-inspired card. Write out all your favorite things about her in a homemade card. Make an acronym for her name! Think of all the ways she’s unique and wonderful, and make something that reflects it!

13. Keep the Peace

If your family is anything like mine…not all days are sunshine and sparkles. Conflict is a natural part of the family experience, but perhaps on Mother’s Day, we can all wave the white flag. When conflict starts or tensions get high, take some deep breaths, take a step back, and try to remember that today is about her. She would probably just like a day of peace and harmony. Let mom have some time alone if she needs it. Ride bikes, do an outside project, or, do separate activities until tensions cool down.

14. Treat Her to a Spa Day

A spa is a wonderful way to help mom relax and enjoy a little pampering. Here are some ideas to make the perfect Mother’s Day spa:

  • Maybe one of your family members gives a good massage?
  • Look up different “steam treatments” that you can do at home.
  • Break out your fluffiest towels (fresh out of the dryer or heated).
  • Be sure she stays hydrated with water infused with fresh berries!
  • Paint her nails (maybe this should be left to the higher-skilled family members).
  • Make her a yogurt-honey face mask so she’ll feel relaxed and moisturized!
