Polished Classic Mom on the Street Susie Flores

Susie Flores’ passion for social media naturally bloomed into a business after years of teaching elementary school. Read on to learn more about this Polished classic Mom on the Street, who juggles her business and family life with grace and grit.

Meet Susie

Hi, I’m Susie Flores! I was born and raised in West Texas. I am a wife, mom of 2, and queso connoisseur. After teaching in the elementary classroom for nine years, I started my own business doing social media management for small businesses with a goal to spend more time with my kids. I love what I do and feel so blessed to be walking out my dreams every single day!

Polished Classic Business Beginnings

When did you first start up Built Virtual?

I started my business, Built Virtual, in November of 2020 while I was on maternity leave!

What made you interested in helping small businesses and entrepreneurs with their social media and marketing strategy?

When I first had the idea to leave the teaching world, I thought I wanted to work for my dad. He owns a building company, and I wanted to help him expand and grow it with more up-to-date marketing strategies. After several years of these dreams not falling into place, I took online courses. Ultimately, my goal was to work from home, allowing me to spend more time with my kids. Over time, as I learned more about social media management, I grew more and more passionate about helping small business owners grow!

Have you always enjoyed social media? What is your background working within marketing/social media?

I really have! For years, creating content for my personal page brought me an unusual joy, and I used it as a creative outlet. Before starting my business, I did not have any background in marketing! The online courses and business mentors I’ve worked with along the way have empowered me to grow my business into what it is today!

Family Support and Lifestyle

Do your husband, family, and friends support your business? How so?

My husband is my biggest cheerleader! He is a 9 on the Enneagram, so he is very laid back, confident, and worry-free. He has always trusted my instincts and has been a voice of peace when my *next steps* in business feel overwhelming or chaotic. Brandon and my family as a whole are proud that I’ve found a way to help in supporting our family while working from home with kiddos!

What are three of your go-to tips for anyone trying to revamp their social media?

1. Be consistent! Staying present regularly on social is more important than posting every day!

2. Challenge yourself! It is evolving all the time, and even if it feels overwhelming, putting something out there is better than nothing at all. You never know what might help you reach your goals!

3. Don’t take it too seriously! Social media is very important, and there is a strategy to help you reach your goals, but it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. No one is watching your account as closely as you are, so just have fun with it!

Business Rewards, Challenges, and Goals

What are some of the most rewarding and challenging parts of owning your own business?

The very most rewarding thing for me is that I’m able to spend more time with my kids. Before starting Built, I was a classroom teacher. By the time I got home with my own kids most nights, I was exhausted and had a hard time leaving “school at school” and enjoying my time at home with family. Starting my business has allowed me the freedom to work when I can and spend time fully engaged with my family at all the other times.

The most challenging part is that sometimes (most of the time), working from home means really late nights catching up on work after the rest of the house is sleeping. I’m a night owl and do my best thinking late at night, but prioritizing rest is difficult when I have a lot of to-do lists I want to get done!

What are some of your goals for the future?

I would love to grow my business even more in a way that I could potentially hire more employees, coach business owners in doing their own social media, and maybe even empower more moms to do what I’ve done!

Where can people find you on social media and your website?

On Facebook, I’m Built Virtual – Instagram @builtvirtual, and my website is www.built-virtual.com.

Polished Classic Style

Which three words best describe your style?

Clean, polished, and classic

What are your favorite places to shop?

I don’t actually love to shop! As a side gig, I sell gently used or new clothes for ladies locally on a Facebook group, and I find a lot of my clothes in their “closet cleanouts!” Our family does do a lot of our shopping at Target.

Who’s your favorite style icon?

Eep! I have no idea! Not my specialty!

What’s your best style advice?

I’m all about comfort 🙂

What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without?

I live in my lulu leggings!!

Which trend would you want to see make a comeback?

I feel like vests aren’t as big of a thing anymore, and I really like vests!

What should NEVER make a comeback?

I’m not here for the bellbottom return…

What fashion/style did you love at the time but now cringe when you see old photos?

In junior high, we went through a phase where we wore Abercrombie boy’s cargo shorts. WHY?

What’s your best style secret (e.g., Spanx, fake eyelashes, good makeup, etc.)?

I recently completed a holistic acne healing program, so I learned a lot about the ingredients in skincare products. My new makeup brands are Priia and 100% Pure!

Stilettos or flats?

FLATS! I have a short husband!

Polished Classic Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?

We love being outside! Our neighborhood is really close-knit, and we love taking walks through the neighborhood or walking to one of the FOUR closeby parks!!

What’s been your best family vacation?

For me, it has been our trips to Angel Fire, NM. We’ve gone multiple times, and there is almost nothing to do there. I love it. We absolutely have to spend all of our moments just being together. It’s my fave!

Best parenting advice:

I recently read Roslyn Ross’ book A Theory of Objectivist Parenting, and I loved her advice to treat our littles like tiny foreign guests in our home that don’t understand our way of doing things. Having this in the back of my mind helps me parent with a gentler approach.

Parenting true confession:

I cannot stand crying. I don’t know why it triggers me, but I have a hard time keeping my cool when our kids cry.

What’s your go-to family dinner?

Chili!!! I have perfected my chili recipe, and my family gets sick of it in these colder months, but I love it!

What’s your favorite family restaurant?

We have a local Mexican restaurant called Picoso’s that we love to eat. My last year teaching, the owner’s son was in my class, and for Christmas, he gave me a huge stack of Free Queso Coupons. I still have some, and it is always such a treat!

Polished Classic Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?

The Office – still! In fact, I’m watching it right now. I also love Schitt’s Creek. Those two never get old.

If you could pick anyone to star as you in a movie based on your life, who would it be?

I really relate to Cameron Diaz in The Holiday!

What’s your favorite beach read?

I love murder mysteries and World War II books!

What song would you dance to when nobody’s watching?

All of the old Blink 182 songs!!

If you could go shopping with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be?

I would love to listen to someone who survived World War II, but would kindly ask them to join me for coffee!

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list?

I desperately want to visit the Holocaust Museum and all of the other sites in Washington DC! Our family also really wants to visit Florida and Alaska someday!

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day?

This has changed recently since taking the holistic acne healing course!! My husband and I used to literally eat a coke float in bed every single night for years! Now, I either enjoy a cup of warm tea or a mug of @fallondanae’s bone broth hot chocolate! So yummy.
