Meet Janee

Janee is a full-time wife, mom, labor and delivery nurse, and small business owner. She lives in Texas with her nursing school sweetheart Robert and their three kids Ryleigh, Reagan, and Robert III, Tre for short! Great adventures are her favorite, and she loves traveling with her crew. Janee is an “off the record” comedian and loves to make people laugh with every chance she gets. She says she has a mild shopping addiction and lives for a great TJ Maxx steal… us too, Janee.

Funny Hardworking Style

Which three words best describe your style? Chic, casual, and sporty!

What are your favorite places to shop? TJ Maxx, Target, and Gap

What’s your best style advice? Be true to your style, whatever that may be. I feel like when you force yourself to wear a style that is not you, you don’t exude comfort and confidence in that style.

What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without? A jean jacket. It can transform any outfit or dress.

What should NEVER make a comeback? Capris, knickerbocker length with the slit

What fashion/style did you love at the time but now cringe when you see old photos? Bell bottom jeans

What’s your best style secret? Microbladed eyebrows and light makeup.

Stilettos or flats? I am a sneaker girl, and I could not be happier that sneakers and dresses are currently in style.

Nursing Career

Why did you decide on a career as a nurse?

I initially enrolled in college as a marketing major and thought I wanted to do “business,” whatever that meant. I had no idea what I wanted to do in business, but I thought that business people made a lot of money, and that’s what I was after. One of my classmates was talking about her aunt, who was a nurse. It was like a light bulb went off in my brain. I had never thought about a career as a nurse, so I went to my freshman orientation a few weeks later and changed my major.

What do you find rewarding about your job?

The thing that I find most rewarding about my job is being a part of people’s once-in-a-lifetime moments. I can’t lie and say that those once-in-a-lifetime moments aren’t always good even though most days they are; when they are bad, they are really bad. Connecting with people and guiding them through these experiences never gets old for me. I can walk into work on one of my worst days and have my mood completely transformed when I step into a patient’s room. It is often the validation I need that nursing is exactly where I am supposed to be.

Work-Life Balance

How do you balance being a nurse and a mom?

Balancing being a nurse and a mom is one of the hardest things for me to juggle. When things get busy with the kiddos, and I am working multiple days in a row, I find myself struggling with being a working mom, and I can get a little sulky. I try to remind myself that when I am away from home and working, that is my focus. I have entrusted someone to care for the kids and make sure that everything is running smoothly. The same is true of work when I am home with the kids, that is my focus, and I have to let work go until I am back there again. I think it is definitely easier said than done; it’s the agony of a working mom.

What is it like having a husband who shares the same profession as you?

It has honestly been one of the greatest gifts. Nursing is a physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding profession. There are certain things that you experience as a nurse that only another nurse would understand. On some of our hardest days, we’ve been able to share things with each other or just listen to one another vent or decompress, and the level of understanding and compassion for each other has made my love for him even stronger.

Funny Hardworking Business Life

Tell us about your shaved ice truck business!

We started The Retreat Shaved Ice Company three years ago, but we spent the first season branding the business and learning how to make our product. Summer 2020 was our first official season open. We are a mobile business and travel to various locations for events. Robert is the master shaver, and I am typically working the window taking orders and payments. It has been, so fun working and learning an industry that we had no previous experience with. We have also loved working together to build and grow our business. Of course, working with your spouse is not always peachy, and I often joke that if the walls of the trailer could talk, they would have a story to tell when we finish each event.

How did you decide to become a small business owner?

Robert is an entrepreneur at heart and is constantly looking for business opportunities. One Sunday after church, shaved ice was being served in the parking lot. Robert very casually said, “that seems like a really good business idea; the margins have to be great.” Little did I know that later that day, he went home and added himself to a food truck and trailers Facebook group. Two weeks later, we were en route to a small city outside of Dallas to see a fully loaded shaved ice trailer that someone was selling after two years in business. After a few days of discussion, we took the leap and decided to purchase it!

Business Advice

What advice do you have for other small business owners?

Be patient and show yourself grace. Starting a small business isn’t an easy feat, but it’s worth it. You will constantly learn new things, and just when you think you’ve got it, a new learning experience will come your way. Be patient; no solid small business is built overnight. There are so many things that go on behind the scenes before people even discover that your business exists. Lastly, I would say have fun with your business as much as you can. The great days will give you the fuel you need to carry through on the not-so-great days.
