Crafty Photographer Mom on the Street: Megan Clark

Whether she’s crafting, caring for her children, or taking photos of families, Artsy Photographer Mom on the Street Megan Clark brings a fun, creative spirit to the world around her.

Meet Megan

I am an elementary teacher-turned SAHM and photographer who lives in Southwest Virginia. I have two amazing sons, and my husband, Nick, and I have been together for almost 15 years. When I’m not wrangling my kiddos, or at photo sessions, I enjoy hiking, cooking, craft projects, and wine tasting.

Photography Business

Being a creative soul, what made you interested in photography?

Photography was always a hobby of mine, but when I found out I was pregnant with my first son in 2016, I bought my first “real” camera and learned how to take pictures off of automatic mode. I knew I wanted to capture all the exciting moments in his life. Even now that photography is my job, my own kiddos are my favorite subjects.

What are some of your favorite photos you have ever taken?

I have a soft spot for newborn sessions. There’s something so special about being at a family’s home during those first precious (and exhausting!) weeks at home with their new little one.

What are some of your goals and hopes for the future for your photography?

It has been extremely exciting to watch my business grow in just two years. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my client base and offering a few new seasonal mini sessions to my rotation. I’m doing Valentine’s Day minis this year for the first time, and they’re going to be fun!

It also looks like you’re pretty crafty and enjoy being creative with your kids; what made you interested in crafting?

Yes! We love to do projects together. I grew up with a very craft mom and grandma, and some of my fondest memories with them were learning to crochet or making Halloween costumes and other holiday-related crafts.

Photography Business Family Support, Challenges, and Rewards

Do your husband, family, and friends support your endeavors? How so?

My husband is SO supportive of me! From watching our boys while I’m away at shoots to helping me figure out the ins and outs of owning my own business, he’s been by my side throughout my entire journey.

What are some of the most rewarding and challenging parts of owning your own photography business?

The most rewarding part is definitely getting to know the families I work with, especially when working with the same families several times a year. I really get to know them and watch their children grow year after year. It’s very special. The challenging part is finding clients and advertising. I don’t have a marketing or business background, so this is one aspect of being a business owner that I’m always trying to improve on.

Where can people find you and your photography on social media and your website?

Artsy Photographer Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?

We love to explore new places, whether it’s a hiking trail, traveling to a new city, or checking out an exhibit at a local museum. I love introducing my kids to the amazing world around us.

What’s been your best family vacation?

This past summer, my boys and I went on a month-long road trip! We went through eight different states and were able to see so many cool things. My husband was able to join us for a bit at the beginning and end of the trip, too, which was great.

Best parenting advice?

My grandma gave me the best advice-don’t listen to anyone’s advice. Haha! She said that every parent, every child, and every situation is different, and she knew I’d be able to come through any rough patch better than before by figuring out how to deal with it in my own way. She was right!

What’s your go-to family dinner?

My family loves it when we have Taco Tuesday. My five-year-old would seriously eat six tacos if we let him.

Artsy Photographer Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?

Oh man, where to begin! I could watch The Office and Schitt’s Creek over and over.

If you could pick anyone to star as you in a movie based on your life, who would it be?

Zooey Deschanel would be a dream! She was my inspiration for cutting my bangs, like, 15 years ago, and I love her style.

What song would you dance to when nobody’s watching?

I love to listen to David Bowie when I’m cooking. I pour a glass of wine, crank up “Ziggy Stardust” or “Let’s Dance,” and dance around the kitchen. My kids like to help me cook, too, and they’re starting to sing along with some of the classics. It makes me so proud.

If you could go shopping with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be?

Audrey Hepburn, for sure! I’ve loved her movies since I was very little. Her style is so classic!

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list?

One of my goals is to make it to all of the continents. So far, I’ve been to North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. I’d love to visit Morocco or South Africa soon.
