Meet Hannah
Hannah is a mother of four who lives in Virginia Beach, VA for most of the year and in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the summers. There, she and her husband run an overnight surf camp called Surf Hatteras for kids and teens, working alongside ten college kids on staff. When she and her family are not running barefoot in the Outer Banks, you will find her homeschooling her children, creating jewelry for her line, Byrd Jewelry, and continuing to spend a lot of time with young adults in their 20s. (Check out VB Fellows to see more about that). Though she has a very full life and most days doesn’t brush her hair, her faith keeps her grounded and the number one thing she seeks daily is wisdom.
Beach Bohemian Style
Which three words best describe your style? “Bohemian Beach Chic” (I took a vote from friends and these are what sounded best.)
What are your favorite places to shop? Well, Target has a pretty good clothing game right now, so that’s usually when I snag a few fun trendy pieces and some basic tees. But if I’m actually able to shop, my latest go-to is Nordstrom Rack with the occasional stop by Anthro.
What’s your best style advice? Only buy what you absolutely love, what fits well, and what makes you feel great (as opposed to just shopping the trends). Also, invest in a few pieces that will last for years to come, then mix in the Target one-offs here and there for fun.
What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without? A really comfortable, nice pair of jeans or jean shorts.
Which trend would you want to see make a comeback? Well, I’m a child of the ’80s, so they pretty much have all come back already. The high-waisted “mom jeans” my mom used to wear are now a go-to in my closet.
What should NEVER make a comeback? Pleated pants.
What fashion/style did you love at the time, but now cringe when you see old photos? Platform shoes. I towered over everyone in photographs.
What’s your best style secret? Just keep it simple and accessorize with some Byrd Jewelry! (Shameless plug). But no really, I’m into being comfortable and feeling good in my clothes, so you will most often find me in jeans and a solid or striped tee. I prefer my summertime style more than anything in my closet which is no shoes, no makeup, a bathing suit, and cover-up.
Stilettos or flats? I’m a mom of four and my husband is my exact height so you can probably guess!
Beach Bohemian Family
What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family? Probably at the beach. (Which is nice because we run a surf camp in the summers and are at the beach a lot). There’s always something for everyone to be doing whether it’s surfing, boogie boarding, or playing in the sand. I love that we can be active together and enjoy the ocean even though each time we go it looks different and will be a different experience.What’s been your best family vacation? We went to the North Shore of Oahu last year for two weeks, so definitely that. It was also really fun traveling there with friends! The kids were more behaved and always entertained. Best parenting advice: Spend more time connecting with your children than correcting. That way you build trust, and they are more likely to listen to you. Also, work through your own “stuff” because it’s going to come out in your parenting if you don’t. Parenting true confession: I really like to feel like I have it all together, but hardly ever do. What’s your go-to family dinner? Anything Mexican.What’s your favorite family restaurant? Chick-fil-A!

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch? This past year I couldn’t get enough of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Stranger Things.
What’s your favorite beach read? Well if AirPods count as reading, I am in the third book of the Red Rising trilogy and it’s incredible.
What’s the best song to dance to when nobody’s watching? The entire “Honey” album by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, you get the idea.
What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? Australia/ New Zealand with our whole family. My husband and I both lived in each for a bit and would love to take our kids one day.
What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? Ice cream.
