Experience ViBe First Friday: Art, Food, Shops, and Culture

enjoy the shops and events at the Vibe

With its colorful murals and fabulous offerings, the ViBe Creative District is the place to be in Virginia Beach. What’s the best way to experience it? The ViBe First Friday!

ViBe First Friday: Celebrate the New Month

Held the first Friday of each month, ViBe First Friday provides the perfect opportunity to experience this part of the city. To celebrate the beginning of every month, local businesses in the ViBe Creative District host Pop-Ups and Special Events. It’s the perfect time to get out and try that new drink you had been hearing about, or marvel at art, catch up with friends, reconnect and explore the neighborhood.

Making a ViBe First Friday List

The line-up for this month’s ViBe First Friday does not disappoint! The day starts as soon as the bustling coffee shops open, and events and specials go on throughout the evening.

My own list is already a mile long. And I will advise you to plan ahead. If you’re going to do it – do it right. Invite a friend – or bring your family, and hit the sidewalk to have a truly magical afternoon/evening. And guess what, the weather is looking beautiful. ViBe First Friday begins at 8:00 a.m. and lasts all day until 10:00 p.m. so you have plenty of time to do a bunch of fun things.

Start your morning with one of the many coffee shops, like Three Ships or Java Surf, shop around some of the local boutiques, and head to brunch at fabulous restaurants. Since the ViBe is just a short walk to the oceanfront, you could walk down to the boardwalk for some fresh air and sunshine!

ViBe First Friday Walking Tour

Don’t miss the 5:30 p.m. ViBe First Friday Walking Tour! It’s free but donations to the ViBe Creative District non-profit are welcome. The tour leaves from The Runnymede Corporation located on Parks Ave (between 21st and 22nd Street) and the parking is free.

The tour gives you a little background to the history – and paints you a clear picture as to where everything is located. Highlights include all of the fabulous murals, creative crosswalks, sidewalk art, and MORE! Definitely use this opportunity to take photos of your favorite art as backgrounds, especially the new LOVEwork next to the VB Public Library.

Explore the ViBe Murals on ViBe First Friday

In May 2018, 10 artists spent ten days painting murals on buildings in the ViBe Creative District. It was quite an amazing feat, especially since the weather was a little dicey! Challenge your family and friends to snap photos in front of each of the murals on ViBe First Friday, and pick your favorite.

Also, you do not want to miss the sweet little pathway along 18th Street, winding its way through the trees. Alongside this path is the most colorful fence you’ll ever see in town! Colorful murals of all shapes and sizes sit alongside each other. All of the artwork is 100% donated to the ViBe from local students, amateur, and professional artists who share their love of our amazing city! If you look up you’ll see an assortment of birdhouses, designed and painted by local students.

ViBe First Friday at the Annex

Visit The Annex and check off not one, but TWO murals from your list. It’s a Collaborative Studio, with a wonderful mix of all things business and creative! It hosts many interesting events throughout the year, ranging from book clubs to parties to military ceremonies, and more.

On the upcoming ViBe First Friday (October 5, 2018), The Annex is celebrating with a Pop-Up with local vendors such as Deep Creek Designs (woodworks and so much more), Made Mod (handmade peg boards), Kyusi, (sweets and cakes), Studio 336 (Modern Lettering). Also – be sure to grab a brand new “Search & Find: First Friday” to explore and get to know the neighborhood! It’s a great way to meet new people, experience the ViBe Creative District, go to your tried and true restaurants, and check out the businesses you’ve been wanting to visit.

Outside, as the sun goes down, you will be able to watch as The Annex get their very own impressive mural by local artist Devon Miller, which was designed especially for Samaritan’s House‘s “Paint 757 Purple” campaign.

ViBe First Friday and More

Obviously, we’ve just scratched the surface of the many shops and events at the Vibe. Read on for more ViBe favorites! And be sure to send photos in front of the murals to your friends and family on FamilyApp!
