Planning for a Rainy Day?

Instead of sitting in your hotel room watching the rain pour down on the balcony, check out our list of fun rainy day activities for you and your family to do outside of the hotel.

Here are 12 of our favorite family activity spots in Virginia Beach:

1) Virginia Beach Escape Room

Adventure is waiting to be had at the Escape Room in Virginia Beach. Groups anywhere from 2 to 8 people are challenged to escape a room full of clues and secrets. Escape Rooms are a great family game, team-building exercise, and just plain old fun. Having to escape from an enclosed room might not sound like fun, but don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe. Each escape game is closely monitored by staff members, and clues are available if you get stuck! Escape rooms are a great rainy day experience for people of all ages!

2) iFLY Indoor Skydiving

Do you have the “itch” for adventure, perhaps doing something that you haven’t done before? Then iFLY is right up to your speed, minus the jumping out of the plane part! iFLY welcomes flyers from 3 to 103, and they even have group and birthday party rates, so zip up that suit and take flight in the wind tunnel. To speed things up prior to arrival, book your spot and sign your waiver ahead of time. Virginia is for lovers, and for flyers!

3) Apex Entertainment Center

Maybe flying isn’t your thing, but you’re still looking for a good adventure. Head over to Apex Entertainment Center for a few rounds of laser tag! Divide your family into teams, and whichever team wins buys a round of ice cream at the Oceanfront. Bonus points for whichever player picks the most creative gamer-tag!

At Apex, you can experience plenty of other competitive and fun activities like arcades, escape rooms, go-kart racing, axe-throwing (if you dare), a ropes course, mini-golf, and more! This indoor VA activity is the perfect experience for family and friends alike.

4) Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is always the perfect place to escape from the rain. With a lot of interesting exhibits and a slew of cool undersea animals and daily events, you could spend an entire morning here! Many Virginia Beach residents are members of the Virginia Aquarium just so they can have a dry place to explore on a rainy day! Be sure to plan accordingly – and arrive right at 9:00 a.m. when the aquarium doors open to avoid the crowds.

5) Pinboy’s At The Beach

Hit the bowling lanes at “Pinboy’s at the Beach“; it’s only a short trip down Laskin Road from the Oceanfront. Pinboy’s is open every day of the week starting at 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m., depending on the day. They have daily specials and group rates, and you can always call ahead to see how busy they are. They tend to be extra busy on a rainy day. Bowling is fun for all ages, as you can pull out the bumpers for the pre-schoolers in your group!

6) Jump Trampoline Park

Do you like to exercise while having fun with your kids? Bust out those black and orange socks, and head to Jump Trampoline Park. You’ll probably surprise yourself at how much fun parents can have here, too. Especially those of us whose parents never let them have a trampoline as a child. No jumping, no fun! If you have smaller toddler & pre-school-aged kids, be sure to go to the “Jumping Beans” slots on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., you don’t have to worry about any bigger kids jumping into your little ones. Suit up and go jump!

7) Beach Side Social

Perhaps leisure sports are your favorite way to spend a rainy day? Beach Side Social is a hip new family-friendly spot in Virginia Beach, featuring floor shuffleboard, bocce ball, board games, craft cocktails and beer, and fast-casual eats. With a great location on Atlantic Ave and a bright and cheery decor, this is a great spot for hiding from the rain and having a good time with your family members. Local tip: If you sign up for their mailing list they’ll give you a free hour of shuffleboard!

8) Top Golf

Sometimes golf can feel more tedious than fun. And if you’re not experienced, there is a big learning curve to keep up with frequent players. And, if the weather is bad, you won’t get very far on an outdoor course. Top Golf is tons of fun for golfers on every level, from beginners to professionals! They have a full-service kitchen and bar too, so you can even enjoy a delicious meal while you play. Rain or shine, Top Golf is an experience that everyone needs to try!

9) Flipper McCoy’s

Did you love to play video games at the arcade when you were younger? Then Flipper McCoy’s is the place for you! They have a fantastic classic video game section (as well as the new ones too). This is the perfect time to show your kids just how awesome you are at playing Pac-Man and that Air Hockey is your jam. Also, this is the perfect time to squeeze the whole family into the photo booth and take a family portrait – the best face wins! Flipper McCoy’s is just one street off of the Virginia Beach boardwalk, making this spot great for summer trips. Send a photo of the photo securely to friends and family on the FamilyApp.

10) Beach Cinema Alehouse

Sometimes rainy days are the perfect excuse to go see a movie. You’ll find tons of attractions at the Beach Cinema Alehouse, including a wonderful food menu and only the latest movies! With the right people, seeing a movie can feel like a party, so don’t be surprised if you run into someone you know. Stay up to date on prices and which movies are showing on their website.

11) PlantHouse

Formerly known as “PlantBar,” this beautiful, lush store is filled with all kinds of beautiful (and sometimes exotic) houseplants and pottery. They’ll even pot your plant for free and give you any tips on how to care for your new, green friend. PlantHouse has “terrarium-building nights,” too, where you can bring friends and build a succulent or air plant terrarium, with all kinds of fun additions. Plants and drinks? What else could you need for a fun night out?

12) The Children’s Museum of Virginia (Portsmouth)

Okay, so it’s not in Virginia Beach. But it’s a 25 (ish) minute drive from the Oceanfront, and worth every spare minute of travel time. In fact, I grew up going to this place and it has some of my most vivid, wonderful childhood memories. With a planetarium and two floors of exhibits, the kids will never get bored. Fun for all ages, you can’t go wrong at the Children’s Museum. They’re currently doing some renovations, so check their website before you go to see what’s open.
