Perfect Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients
  

  • 6 large russet potatoes peeled and cut in half lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced if desired
  • salt and pepper to taste

Perfect Mashed Potatoes

  • Put potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender (this should be 20 to 25 minutes).
  • Drain, then put potatoes back into the pot. Turn to high heat and let the potatoes to rest for about 30 seconds, then turn off the heat.
  • Mash the potatoes with a potato masher, then add the butter and milk (and garlic, if desired). Continue to mash until desired consistency.
  • Whisk in the salt and black pepper until evenly distributed, about 15 seconds.
