Meet Micah

I’m Micah. I’m an Oregon-raised son of a country preacher. Described as equal parts grit and grace — whiskey and wisdom. I’m a father, musician, brand guy, and thinker.  My passions are for the people, places, and things that move me and teach me more about myself and the world around me. While I don’t have all the answers — I do know what has worked and not worked for me thus far on my journey.

Refined Gritty Style

Which three words best describe your style?

I’d say my style is a balance of grit, class, and details. I like to express my gritty mountain kid roots through things like well-worn jeans and boots, but keep it classed up through things like my staple fedora. I also like an outfit that rewards a closer inspection. As in… there are subtle details that set it apart when you look closer. From a rolled sleeve, to a lapel pin or a tasteful amount of a kerchief peeking out of my back pocket.

Facial hair or clean-shaven?
For me, facial hair. I started losing my hair when I was 21 so I started having at least some degree of a beard. A razor hasn’t touched this chin since! As for other guys – I’d say whatever works best for your vibe. 🙂

What fashion/style did you love at the time, but now cringe when you see old photos?

ALL. OF. THIS.
(And yes – that’s actually me as a 19 year old.)

Refined Gritty Style Tips

What are your favorite places to shop?

I can’t say I have a favorite shop or brand in particular. I’m extremely picky. When a piece strikes me, I scoop it up. It could be anywhere from a random booth at the Nashville Flea Market to an online retailer like P&Co or even just classic J.Crew. It’s never about a brand or label for me and always about how an individual pieceworks with the rest of my wardrobe, and how it interacts with my body.

Who’s your favorite style icon?
Classics… James Dean, Steve McQueen. Guys that had both edge and refinement.

What’s your best style advice?
Know who you are from the inside out. Knowing who you are will help you understand what you want to outwardly say through things like your wardrobe, and it’ll also give you the confidence to wear what you want without regard for a trend or opinion of someone with probably less style or confidence than you! The one rule I fully believe in is this: if confidence makes almost anything work. So know who you are, and express it from there.

Refined Gritty Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?
My favorite tradition with Margot is taking her to a coffee shop down the street every Sunday afternoon. We get ice cream with pink princess sprinkles, sit on the floor in the back, and after ice cream is done, we read a book or two and just sit together. It’s intentional, she knows it’s coming every week so it helps her feel valued, and there’s no grand agenda. I’m a firm believer that those regular little moments will mean the most in the long run.

What’s been your best family vacation?
Christmas in Oregon this year. My whole family in a large cabin at a 150-year-old dude ranch that was 15 miles up a canyon out past Pendleton, Oregon… No internet. No cell signal. Just family and forced “unplugging” for a week straight, surrounded by vast nature. Even Margot still talks about it.

What’s your favorite family activity?
Same as how we spend time! Coffee shop hangs with books, ice cream, and just being together talking.

What’s your dad superpower?
Empathy. I don’t know about it being a super-power, but the effects of learning how to truly feel what my tiny li’l lady is feeling, enter into that place with her, and wipe those tears away is pretty darn powerful. She feels heard and understood, and it deepens our bond and sets us up for more success the next time she’s in her feels for any reason whatsoever.

Refined Gritty Parenting

Best parenting advice:

I’m a firm believer that my job as a dad is to relentlessly pour love over my daughter. To teach her that she is so safe and secure in her identity and in knowing that she is loved that it allows her to blossom and grow and be free in becoming who she is intended to be, knowing she has a pappa that roots for her.

Parenting true confession:

Margot’s diet has involved far more McDonald’s chicken nuggets than my only-organic and gluten-free parent friends might appreciate. Sorry, fam. Just being real!

What’s your go-to family dinner?

When Margot gets her way, it’s mac n’ cheese… when daddy gets his way, it’s bbq pork tacos!

What’s your favorite family restaurant?

When Margot gets her way, it’s Chick-Fil-A, when daddy gets his way, it’s Mas Tacos (local taco spot in East Nashville).

Refined Gritty Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?

I’m gonna sound Amish here or something… I don’t own a TV and haven’t watched my way through even a full Nextflix show in a very long time! I occasionally re-watch Arrested Development if that counts?!

What’s your favorite sport and why?

Skiing! I grew up doing it… even though I might be a ski bum for a bit. And I have a deep love for both nature, and how incredibly quiet and still it is at the top of a mountain before you rip down through an alpine glade covered in fresh powder snow.

What’s the best song to dance to when nobody’s watching?

Watching or not, I’ve been dancing to Drake’s entire album lately! Don’t let someone else’s side-eye dictate your vibe!

If you could hang out with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be?

I’d have to say Jesus, hands down. I wouldn’t call myself a Christian in an American-Evangelical sense. But he’s unlike any other person in history. His life, his message, and his impact are greater than any other figure in history. He was a rabble-rouser of the highest order. I’ve been called one too.

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list?

Trekking through Nepal concluded with a backpack excursion to the base camp of Mt Everest. A trip was actually on the books for it, but then we were expecting Margot so that was tabled. It will happen one day though!

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day?

Either with a cocktail (Boulvardier or Negroni), hot bath, and a good book (currently “Silence in the Age of Noise), or an evening out with some of my squad! It all depends on the moment. 🙂
