The Need for Gluten-Free Pizza

Following a gluten-free diet can feel restrictive. Whether you have celiac disease, a gluten intolerance, or want to decrease your gluten intake, it can be hard to find gluten-free products of your favorite foods that don’t taste like cardboard.

But many companies have come up with some innovative ways for you to enjoy pizza without gluten. You can find a gluten-free crust made of cauliflower, chickpea, rice, or any other gluten-free flour, but not all pizza crusts are created equal. Here are some great options that will keep you feeling great and taste amazing!

The Best Store-Bought Gluten free Frozen Pizzas and Crusts

Caulipower

Cauliflower is one of the most common gluten-free substitutes for a traditional pizza crust. Not only is a  cauliflower crust gluten-free, but it is lower in calories and carbohydrates than a wheat crust. Caulipower is a popular brand suitable for most food allergies since it is gluten, dairy, and peanut-free. However, it is not egg-free, so it would not fit into a vegan diet. These crusts are a bit thinner than a regular crust, but they are still delicious. You can buy Caulipower cauliflower pizza crusts and frozen pizzas at most Targets, Whole Foods, Walmarts, and other grocery stores. Check out their store locator to find some delicious pizzas and crusts near you!

Banza

At my house, we have grown to love chickpea pizza! It adds more flavor than a cauliflower crust and provides a higher protein content! Banza, a popular brand known for its chickpea pasta, also sells pre-made gluten-free pizza crusts and frozen pizzas! Coming from a family with many food allergies, I usually opt for the pizza crust and customize our toppings, but getting the frozen gluten free pizzas reduces prep time! The Banza crusts are grain-free, have a short ingredient list, and are verified vegan. The frozen pizza varieties include margarita, veggie, and four cheese made with parmesan, white cheddar, provolone, and mozzarella cheese. You can find Banza pizzas at most whole foods, Target, and on amazon.com. To find more retailers close to you, check out their store locator.

Udi’s

Another common type of gluten-free flour used in pizza crusts is made from rice. My favorite gluten-free rice pizza is Udi’s! They sell thin crusts that get crispy when baked. These crusts are non-dairy and nut-free but not vegan. Udi’s also sells frozen pepperoni, four cheese, supreme, and margarita pizzas! They even make gluten-free pizzas with a sweet potato crust, proving that really anything can be turned into gluten-free pizza dough!

Tip: Bake your pizza in an outdoor pizza oven for maximum flavor and fun.

Freschetta Gluten Free Pizza

Another popular brand of frozen pies is Freschetta Gluten Free Pizza, certified by the National Celiac Association. Their crusts are made with rice powder and tapioca. While I have never had Freschetta’s pre-made pizzas, they look and sound delicious. Especially since the crusts are seasoned with garlic powder. They also seem easy to make!

Which Pizza Chain Has the Best Gluten-Free Pizza?

Most big pizza chains are expanding their menus to accommodate those with gluten allergies and sensitivities. For example, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Mod Pizza all have GF options. Ordering from these pizzerias will allow you to enjoy your next pizza party!

Papa John’s

Papa John’s gluten-free pizza dough is made with sorghum, rice, and tapioca flour instead of wheat-based flour. So, if you can guess, the answer to the question of, “Does Papa Johns’s have cauliflower crust pizza?” would be no. Since Papa John’s menu consists mainly of gluten-filled pizzas, there is a risk of cross-contamination. This option is best for those who are non-celiac. Papa John’s GF pizza is thinner than their other crusts but is a good combination of crispy and chewy! You might even forget you’re eating gluten-free.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut has partnered with Udi’s to make gluten-free pizzas. The only downfall is that they are currently only available in one-third of Pizza Hut’s nationwide. Does Pizza Hut have cauliflower crust for their gluten-free options? Unfortunately, not yet, but there are plenty of gluten-free specialty pizza options you can enjoy here. Unless you are in a pinch, you can save money by baking a Udi’s pizza at home with your own sauce and mozzarella cheese!

Domino’s

Domino’s gluten-free pizza crust is made primarily with rice flour, but similar to Papa John’s, the crusts are likely exposed to cross-contamination, so those with celiac are not encouraged to order from Domino’s. This pizza is sweeter and chewier than other gluten-free pizza crusts, but overall, it is a good option for delivery.

Does Domino’s have cauliflower crust pizza? Like many national chains, it does not. But Domino’s alfredo sauce is gluten-free, so that’s another delicious choice for your pizza. Getting Domino’s tracker notifications through the Domino’s app also makes ordering here really convenient, so you know how long it will be before you receive your pizza.

MOD Pizza

MOD Pizza has both cauliflower and gluten-friendly crusts! At Mod, you can dine in, order carryout, or even get delivery. The gluten-free crust is vegan and made primarily with rice flour! They even have dairy-free cheese to add as a topping. The cauliflower crust is also gluten-free, but, like the pizzerias above, neither crust is recommended for someone with celiac disease. These crusts are both thin, crispy, and full of flavor!

Who Has the Best Tasting Gluten-Free Pizza?

My family has eaten a lot of gluten-free pizza over the years, and our favorite pizza to get delivered is MOD pizza! It’s a great place for the family since they have multiple sizes, so everyone can order exactly what they want!

What Restaurants Have the Best Gluten-Free Pizza?

Eating out with gluten sensitivity can be hard. Thankfully many restaurants are becoming more accommodating by offering a gluten-free menu. Below are my top three favorite chain restaurants where you can enjoy a delicious slice of gluten-free pizza while dining with family and friends.

BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse

BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse has a gluten-free pizza crust that is anything but boring. It has the perfect amount of spices mixed in that brings the same (and maybe even more) flavor than a regular crust. All of the sauces, cheese, and toppings at BJ’s are gluten-free, except for the meatballs, so you can customize the pizzas to your liking! Additionally, BJ’s avoids cross-contamination in the kitchen, so these pizzas are celiac-approved.

California Pizza Kitchen

California Pizza Kitchen is another great restaurant to indulge in a gluten-free pizza! They use a cauliflower crust that contains egg and dairy, so it wouldn’t be suitable for a vegan. They also use a certified gluten-free crust and ingredients, so anyone with celiac would be safe to eat here! CPK also offers kid’s sized gluten-free pizzas.

Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom has a delicious and unique selection of pizzas. They offer a list of dedicated gluten-free pies safe for those with celiac disease, but they can make any pizza on a gluten-free crust for those not worried about a little cross-contamination.

If these restaurants aren’t nearby, don’t fret! Another tip to identify where you can get gluten-free pizza is to type into Google “gluten-free restaurants near me” or “gluten free pizza near me.” That way, you can do your own research to find the best options that align with your dietary needs.

How Do You Make Your Own Gluten-Free Pizza?

During quarantine last year, I made my fair share of gluten-free pizzas from scratch (what else was there to do?). I started by making rice flour crusts, which were more successful than my attempts with almond flour. They eventually worked out, but the dough did not bind like regular pizza dough. (Udi’s uses Xanthan gum in their rice flour crusts to keep it from falling apart). Eventually, I took a different approach and began baking with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free bread flour, which became my favorite method.

This crust is naturally dairy-free and soy-free, using extra-virgin olive oil, honey, and warm water as the wet ingredients. The dry ingredients include gluten-free bread flour, baking powder, and salt, making this crust allergen-friendly and simple to bake. A good gluten-free pizza is all about the dough. There are plenty of pizza crust recipes out there, but most of them include dry yeast, and since that’s not something I keep in my pantry at all times, here is my favorite gluten-free, yeast-free pizza crust!

I usually par-bake (cook about 80% of the time, then freeze) extra crusts to cook later when I am in a rush, so next time I want a yummy pizza, I can just pull it out of the freezer, add sauce, and cheese, and bake! To make the pizza baking process even faster, you can bake the pizza in an outdoor pizza oven once the dough is made.

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups Gluten-Free Bread Flour (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Cup Water (lukewarm)

Instructions

Prep Dough

  • Add the flour, salt, and baking powder to the stand mixer bowl and whisk. Then, add the olive oil, water, and honey to the mixture. Using the stand mixer and dough hook, mix until well combined. Increase to medium speed for 5 minutes.
  • Lightly spray a spatula with cooking oil and scrape the sides of the bowl. Transfer the dough into an oiled bowl or proofing bucket (If using a bowl, cover with plastic wrap) then, place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  • Remove dough from the refrigerator and divide into two equally sized balls. Sprinkle each lightly with flour and cover one with a moist tea towel and set it aside. Lightly flour a flat surface and use floured hands and a rolling pin to shape pizza into a 12 inch circle. Rotate frequently to avoid sticking. Set crust aside and repeat with other dough ball.

Bake Pizza

  • Preheat Pizza stone and oven to 375°F. While the Oven is preheating, add preferred toppings to pizzas and then bake one at a time for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the crust is browned. Slice and serve!

Another healthy way to cook gluten-free pizza is to make a Neapolitan pizza. A Neapolitan or Naples-style pizza is made with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes with some basil leaves on top and sprinkled with grated romano cheese. Simple, healthy, and delicious!

If you struggle to please everyone in the family, double the recipe and make two pizza crusts!
