Meet The Born Explorers

We are a multinational family of 5. Lukasz is from Poland, I’m from the US, our boys were born in the Czech Republic, and our daughter was born in Switzerland. We just moved to Canada in December and we are looking forward to the time when we’ll be able to get out and explore our new home!

The Born Explorers Lifestyle

What three words best describe your family? Adventurous, curious, and fun

What inspired you to pursue frequent traveling as a family? Lukasz and I bonded over a love of travel when we first met, so we knew it would be a part of our future together. When we moved to Europe for his job we knew we had to take advantage of traveling as much as we could since we knew our time there would be limited. We never expected to be there for almost 10 years, but we feel like we really took advantage of every opportunity we had while we lived there and now it’s just a part of our lives that we can’t do without.

How long have you been traveling? I studied abroad in college and Lukasz traveled a lot growing up. We took our first trip together when we were dating and never stopped traveling together. All of our kids have traveled with us since they were infants.

Traveling with the Born Explorers

What’s your favorite place you’ve visited? That’s such a hard question but I’d probably have to say Iceland. It’s like another planet and just so insanely beautiful.

What’s the craziest trip you’ve ever taken? Maybe some places we’ve traveled would seem crazy to others but they’ve all been great. The craziest thing probably was booking a trip to Seville, Spain the day before we left. Flights, hotels, everything. And it turned out to be an awesome trip!

What’s still on your travel bucket list? So much! Lots of Canada to explore, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Egypt, Japan, Greenland…

Life as a Traveling Family

What’s your favorite family activity? We love hiking together. Our kids usually complain at first if it’s been a while since last time, but once they get in the groove it’s a really good way to spend quality time together.

How do you all get along in such close quarters on trips? We have no problem putting the baby’s crib in a bathroom, closet, shower, etc. Anywhere she can be tucked away and out of the chaos so she can sleep and we don’t have to go to bed with her at 7 pm. We also prefer to rent apartments if possible so we can have more space.

Sossusvlei, Namibia

How do you find time for yourself while traveling with the family? We don’t get a lot of that, but we have occasionally used a babysitter recommended by our accommodations for a night out and it’s always been great.

Tips from a Traveling Family

What are your best packing tips? I use the Marie Kondo folding method when I pack our clothes and it saves so much space. Also, pack light. We have really minimized what we travel with since we first started out and it’s so much easier now.

What item(s) could you not live without while traveling? WiFi is helpful since a lot of times we don’t plan out what we’re going to do until we’re actually there. iPads for the plane for the kids. We are pretty screen minimal at home but we let them have basically unlimited screen time on travel days. For the baby, we always take a carrier in addition to the travel stroller.

Grindelwald, Switzerland

How do you keep the kids busy during long travel stretches? iPads are unlimited and we have no shame with it. They love travel days because it’s a treat for them to use their devices since they don’t get much time on them at home. We also pack some cards, travel games, and of course snacks. For the baby, snacks, and any random thing you can find. I don’t bother packing many toys because she will inevitably be far more entertained by all the non-toy items that she finds.

Death Valley, CA

What’s your go-to snack when you’re on the road? We usually pack nuts or trail mix. My boys like sampling chips from different countries and trying new flavors.

What advice do you have for people who might also want to pursue traveling frequently as a family? My advice is to go for it!! Don’t wait until the kids are older because if you start when they’re young it will be like second nature for them. The experiences you will have and the memories you make will far outweigh any of the stress or difficulty of traveling with kids. It is 1,000% worth it!
