Meet Heather, The Slow Fashion Mom

Heather Holiday is a talented maker, a mama of two redheaded children, and a small business owner. She lives in Collingswood, New Jersey with her family. They love being outdoors together, especially visiting the local Farmers Market and living so close to Philadelphia. Or Slow Fashion Mom dreams of one day living on a farm.

Heather founded Rooted Soles (formerly Mason Dixon Made), which specializes in handmade shoes and handbags for all ages. She loves art and creativity. But even more, she “loves the deeply authentic connection that comes from shaping raw materials into something that’s both useful and beautiful.” This is what drives her personal style. Slow Fashion Mom Heather believes in having a connection to the things we bring into our lives and to the makers behind them.

Slow Fashion Style:

Which three words best describe your style? Comfortable, Curated, Classic, Versatile

What are your favorite places to shop?Everlane, and Small Maker shops such as @westoakdesign, @alicealexander, and @coatcheckchicago.

Who’s your favorite style icon? Vivianne Westwood – she’s all about doing whatever makes you happy. So if you want to wear a bikini in the winter with a fur coat you should do it.

What’s your best style advice? I dislike trends, you should wear what you’re comfortable in, and are super happy. When you’re dressing yourself – it’s one of the most important times to be yourself. Style is way more interesting than fashion.

What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without? Toss up between the standard white shirt or a good pair of jeans.

Which trend would you want to see make a comeback? I like the current trend of cut-off jeans. Instead of hemming your jeans, you just crop it off. Jeans don’t come in petite sizes, and I think this look is super cute.

What should NEVER make a comeback? I’m not into scrunchies and I’m not a fan of pleated jeans.

What fashion/style did you love at the time, but now cringe when you see old photos? Wearing bib overalls with one side unclipped. That’s the silliest thing I’ve heard.

What’s your best style secret? Investing in a really good accessory. You can have the most basic outfits of jeans or t-shirt, and when you add fun earrings, or awesome shoes, or a good belt, then suddenly you’re super stylish. You’ve transformed the look and made it your own.

Stilettos or flats? Flats. Always.

Slow Fashion Family:

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family? I like to be outside with my family.

What’s been your best family vacation? We visited Virginia Beach this past summer and stayed in Sandbridge Beach, Virginia. We loved spending time on the beach, kayaking, and cruising down the Virginia Beach Boardwalk on bikes. My best friend lives in Virginia Beach, so having our families together was such a fun time.

Best parenting advice: Lighten up.

Parenting true confession: I don’t feel guilty doing “me time”, but I feel guilty for how happy I am when I’m doing “me time”.

What’s your go-to family dinner? My kids love breakfast for dinner – and any meal that my kids will eat becomes my favorite meal.

What’s your favorite family restaurant? It’s a local restaurant near where I live, Martha.

What’s your favorite beach read? The back of the sunscreen bottle.

What’s the best song to dance to when nobody’s watching? Anything from the ’80s.

If you could go shopping with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be? My grandmother, because it was one of our favorite things we did together.

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? Tulum, Mexico. I want to go there next year.

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? A cup of tea or wine while I watch TV.
