With the temptation of processed and fast food, it can seem like something is always getting between us and our health goals. But, with overwhelming research pointing to the reality of what’s in processed food, clean eating may just be worth it! According to a recent article published in Nature, fresh, healthy food also improves our moods and makes us happier. So the benefits of this lifestyle are both mental and physical.

The best way to truly enjoy food for all its worth is to start with good ingredients. This begins with fresh food. So, if you’re ready to get into the kitchen to adopt some healthy eating habits, we’ve got you covered!

What Is Fresh Food?

The term “fresh food” can apply to many things we consume on a daily basis. While items in a can or the frozen foods aisle are preserved, fresh foods are at their optimum state: ripe and ready-to-eat. “Whole foods” are a kind of fresh food, but plant-based and closest to their natural state as possible. While “fresh foods” can refer to fruit and vegetables, it also pertains to meat, fish, and dairy products too!

Why Is Fresh Food Better Than Frozen?

The more brilliant colors of fresh vegetables and fruits, the more vitamins and nutrients they have! The nutritional value of food can decrease over time so the freshest food is the way to go. Fortunately, since there are no additives, fresh vegetables are low in fat, calories and free from cholesterol. Foods like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and spinach are rich in potassium and help regulate blood pressure. They also contain Vitamin A to keep the skin healthy and Vitamin C, which assists with iron absorption. While fresh foods are part of a balanced diet, they also reduce heart disease risk, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. If you have the choice, healthy fresh food is the way to go.

How Do I Prepare Fresh Food?

To find healthy food in your area, head to a fresh grocer or the health food store. They will have the best ingredients available whether you’re looking for organic food or natural foods. Before you begin cooking, make sure fruit and vegetables are washed and kept away from uncooked items like meat or fish.

It may seem like a little more effort than takeout or pre-packaged food, but the benefits of preparing your own fresh food are worth it. Whether you use old family recipes or your favorite food blog, there are plenty of easy dinner options out there!

Here are some ways to consider preparing fresh foods to preserve their best flavors:

  • Raw fruits and veggies/tossed salad
  • Soups and stews
  • Smoothies/Acai bowls
  • Grilling
  • Stir-frying
  • Baking
  • Pan-searing
