The weather is nice, the days are long, and it’s the perfect time for family sports! Blue skies, sunny weather – get out and get active! We’ll tell you about our favorites that keep everybody fit and add extra quality to your family time.

Family Sports and the Time Factor

In our busy daily lives, we often forget to look after ourselves and our bodies. In fact, a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that only 22.9 % of all American adults get enough exercise. As we all know, it can be difficult to find time for physical exercise. You’re juggling a job, a household, and a bunch of energetic kids! Plus, these days, we’re all staying at home more to steer clear of COVID-19.

So why not include everyone in family sports that will be fun for each and every family member? They also happen to be sports you can easily do while social distancing. Summer and fall are a great time to get in shape, get into nature, and get closer to your kids. Here are three of our favorite sports to do as a family.

Family Sports: Keep Cool and Swim

Especially on hot summer days, there’s nothing better than a cool, refreshing dip in the pool. Natural lakes, a beautiful coastline, calm flowing rivers – the great American outdoors offers endless possibilities. Considering that swimming is one of the healthiest sports for both young and old, this summer could be the perfect chance to fall in love with this activity. If your kids can’t swim yet, swimming lessons at your local pool are easy to organize. If you have friends or neighbors in a similar situation, you could organize group lessons. That’s how you can create a fun environment for everyone. Of course, if your kids are already strong swimmers, you could use this summer to discover the different exciting swimming locations in your area. A family sports day out to a new lake, swimming competitions between you and your kids, a prize for the fastest swimmer. What could be more fun?

Step Up Family Sports Fun

Who doesn’t want their kids tired out by the end of the day? Running or walking in the fresh summer air could be just the answer you’re looking for. Not only is it a challenging physical activity, but it really lets you explore your surroundings and dive into nature.

In fact, why not add some extra-fun elements to your family sports walk or run, which makes your kids even more aware of their environment? Encourage the kids to collect “non-living” things like stones, feathers, leaves etc. They would make for the ultimate summer-flashback scrapbook. Search & Find Adventures are fun for the whole family, a scavenger hunt mixed in with reconnecting with nature and your family! You wouldn’t be the first grown-ups to get back into scavenger hunts!

Looking Good on Two Wheels

You and your family prefer a bit of speed and watching the countryside fly by? Then cycling might be a great family sport activity for you. Given that the US offers a wide network of biking paths of different difficulty levels and distances, there’s something for everyone. If your children are still very young, you could use this summer to teach them the basics of bicycle safety. Those could include the importance of wearing a helmet and basic traffic rules.

family sports

The great thing about cycling is that everyone can join in this family sport, as there are several options even for smaller kids. For infants, you can either use a child seat on the back of your bike or a bike trailer that you attach to your 2-wheeler such as a fan favorite: the Burley Honey Bee.

If your older children aren’t quite peddling on their own, you can attach them to the back of your bike. A balance bike will also do the trek (but maybe not for long-distance!). We especially love the KaZAM Balance Bike!  Taking it to the next level, why not organize a multi-day tour with overnight camping, exploring the outdoors, reconnecting as a family, and creating lasting memories. Be sure to share those pics with all your family on the secure FamilyApp!

Family Triathalon

Guess what? If you combine these sports, you can have a family triathlon! Why not try one this summer? You could make it even more fun by inviting some friends and neighbors. It’s a great way to get exercise while social distancing. Have the kids put extra obstacles into the competition to mix it up. Let your imagination run free and enjoy an active summer party for young and old!
