Meet Nancy

When they got married, Nancy Major married her husband Sam they dreamed of having boys, girls, and a bakery – and they got it all! Nancy is the Chief Cookie Officer at Color My Cookie and Sam is the Owner/Executive Pastry Chef of their wholesale bakery, Dessert Unlimited. Sam and Nancy live in East Dallas with their four children, Catherine, Peter, Elisabeth, Andrew, and a dog named Astro (who wasn’t part of the dream).

Nancy started Color My Cookie after closing their family’s storefront bakery in the wake of COVID. Nancy led the way transforming their bakery’s most popular cookies into a family-friendly mail-order DIY cookie decorating kit that has been featured in The Food Network Online, The Today Show Online, Delish.com, Red Tricycle, and more.

A graduate of Duke University and J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, Nancy worked in nonprofit development for a decade before she met her husband.

Nancy loves her new role as Chief Cookie Officer!

Creative Cookie Style

Which three words best describe your style?Simple, pink, bling

What are your favorite places to shop? Give me all the little boutiques! Let’s be honest, though: I have four kids 10 and under. I do a lot of shopping at Target and Costco, just like everyone else!

Creative in the Kitchen

Who’s your favorite culinary icon? My husband! LOL! No, really. When I met my husband, pastry chef Sam Major, I had just finished law school. I had never once even thought about the job, “pastry chef.” I literally didn’t know that was a thing! I’ve learned everything I know about food service, the restaurant & hospitality industry, and how to “make it” as a chef from him. One time when we were dating, I came home to my apartment and he had filled every rack in my little place with loaves of fresh bread. It was rosemary onion focaccia and it smelled and looked amazing – like a restaurant. He used cups of ice from Jimmy John’s to create the necessary steam in my cheap, old rental apartment oven – but he pulled it off. I was hooked, and to this day, we call the rosemary onion focaccia “marriage bread.

What’s your best cooking advice? If something seems off, it needs a little salt!

What’s your most essential cooking appliance or utensil? I have two favorites – the teeny tiny mini whisk and the long skinny spatula that I basically only use for getting the last of the tomato paste out of the can, but it’s so satisfying to use! Wait. Can I say one more? My husband got me a Magic Bullet blender a few years ago and I use it almost every day – for one-person smoothies and salad dressing. #notsponsored LOL

What’s an underrated food/meal idea that people should try? Birthday cake for breakfast! It’s our family’s favorite birthday morning tradition!

What food trend should NEVER make a comeback? Jello molds, obvs.

Creative Style

What fashion/style did you love at the time, but now cringe when you see old photos? Pleated khakis, braided belts, and oversized polo shirts

What’s your best style secret? Anyone who knows me would laugh that I even got asked this question – ha! I love a good mani-pedi, but other than that, I’d say my best style secret (if it could even be called that) is moisturize! Keep your hair, skin, and nails moisturized; drink lots of water, and honestly, that will give you a great starting point for whatever your style is!

Stilettos or flats?Flats, girl. With support when I can find it, at this point!

Cooking Up Family Fun

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family? I grew up an only child and now that I’m married and have four kids, just being with everyone is my favorite – we love to bake & cook; play with our dog; and find day trip adventures from our home in Dallas. We spend a lot of time in our backyard, which we’ve worked really hard to make a fun, functional space for our family and friends.

What’s been your best family vacation? We are lucky that our families live in beautiful places – we see my husband’s family in Southern Utah every year and my family in Honolulu every other year. In both places, we have a great routine doing the same fun, nostalgic things every time. I love creating those memories in such scenic places with my family.

Best parenting advice: Our bedtime ritual isn’t long but always includes snuggles & a bit of chit-chat with each child – we love reconnecting with each of our kids at the end of the day!

Creative Cookie Parenting

Parenting true confession: I don’t love “playing” with my kids! I talk to them basically nonstop and we do all sorts of projects together – crafts, baking, cleaning, chores, walks – anything but “playing”! I’m really trying to get better at least about playing board games with the older kids, but even that isn’t my favorite. Toys & games just aren’t really my thing!

What’s your go-to family dinner?“Picnic” – cheese, crackers, fruit, veggies, meat, nuts, spreads, bread all on a big platter & take it outside!

What are your best tips for dealing with picky eaters? Don’t make it a battle! Follow @kids.eat.in.color and do what she says!

What’s your favorite family restaurant? We love a place in Dallas called Angela’s Café. We used to have a storefront bakery in the same shopping center as Angela’s and my husband and I spent a lot of mornings & afternoons & late nights there fretting over our business, making plans, or just finally eating after crazy hours of work. The kids love it for breakfast on the weekends, and they have churros that are a real hit with our crew. They’ve got everything from breakfast Tex-Mex all day, so there’s something for everyone and everything is delicious!

Creative Cookie Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch? Parenthood!

If you could pick anyone to star as you in a movie based on your life, who would it be? Kirsten Dunst – in college people would tell me I looked like her!

What’s your favorite cookbook? Martha Stewart Desserts

What song would you dance to when nobody’s watching? I only dance with an audience! Nothing makes my kids laugh like Mom’s dance moves, so anything they are listening to!

If you could eat a meal with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be? Laura Bush!!! In my mind, we are already friends.

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? Branson, Missouri. Really. I imagine it’s like a family-friendly cross between Nashville & Vegas. We’ve gotta make it happen soon!

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? My husband and I have been married 12 years and it’s still like a sleepover at our house every night. Even though we spend all day together working in our business, we keep each other up late telling each other one more thing every night – I wouldn’t have it any other way!

We love how Nancy created an entirely new, creative business once COVID hit. Nancy and her husband Sam are providing a new way for family and friends to have fun in the kitchen with no mess and no fuss.
