How Do I Make Custom Designs for the Cricut?

You don’t have to worry about your artistic skills and coming up with your own design. Cricut Design Space is free to sign up for, and you get access to plenty of free fonts and images.

However, sometimes, if you want something custom-printed, you’ll have to make your own Cricut design. First, you’ll need SVG files. SVG stands for scalable vector graphics, and they’re used for rendering two-dimensional graphics online. These kinds of files are mathematically designed and thus work perfectly with the Cricut and other cutting machines. You can find free SVGs all over the internet, and you can even make your own (which is great if you want a hand-lettered look)!

Cricut Ideas–Crafts

There are infinite possibilities when it comes to Cricut crafting. No matter which machine you choose–whether it’s the Cricut Maker, Cricut Explore Air 2, Cricut Explore 3, or the Cricut Maker 3, they’re all great machines with lots of capabilities. Here are some great ideas of things to do with your machine!

Kids Chore Chart

Sometimes, a well-organized chore chart can help keep kids motivated to help out around the house. It helps with accountability and positive reinforcement, too. Use fun stickers to keep track of their progress on your personalized chart!

Stickers/Decals with Your Own Images

This is one of the most popular Cricut ideas because vinyl stickers/decals are so versatile. If you have a pet you love, a movie you quote, or a place you call home, you can make an adhesive vinyl decal to personalize your car, laptop, or wherever you want! Let the world know who you are with style and flair! For vinyl stickers and decals, you probably won’t need an expensive Cricut with all the bells and whistles. The Cricut Joy is a smaller, more compact machine that will get the job done. Check out this simple video tutorial by Amy of @amymakesthat!

Punny Kitchen Towels/Tea Towels

Cricut ideas don’t just have to be decorative; they can be practical, too. Spice up your kitchen home decor with some fun dishtowels personalized with funny food-themed puns. They’re sure to be a conversation piece for all of your guests.

DIY Team T-Shirts

If you’re the mom in charge of organizing team T-shirts, the Cricut Maker may just be your saving grace. And if you do it right, your t-shirts should last for over 50 wash cycles!  To make custom HTV (Heat transfer Vinyl), go to Cricut Design Space, click on “New Project,” then click on Templates in the upper left corner. Choose “Classic T-Shirt” and pick a style, size, and color. The template will help you size your design, so it looks good on your T-shirt. You’ll find many designs for iron-on Tshirts right in the Cricut design space. Cricut also has infusible ink that delivers seamlessly smooth, professional-quality transfers that become one with your fabric or material– this is great for projects that you want to be long-lasting!

Wedding Decor and Favors

Those little tags you add to favors can cost a lot more than they’re worth from a printer. With the Cricut, you can print out your own wedding favor tags, cake toppers, signs, and table numbers. If you’re really going all out on the DIY projects, but want the machine with the best bang for your buck, the Cricut Explore Air 2 is a great choice.

Paper Flowers

Paper flowers are always beautiful, and you never have to worry about watering them. With cardstock, create a beautiful backdrop for photos, a floral frame for mirror or shadowbox, or a beautiful centerpiece. The Cricut comes with 10 different patterns for paper flowers, so there’s no shortage of possibilities!

Endless Cricut Ideas With Custom Stencils

Stencils are the bread and butter of both the Cricut crafting world and the crafting world in general. Stencils make it easy to apply custom words and shapes. Here’s a brief tutorial on how to create and use stencils with Cricut.

  • Choose your design in Cricut Design Space.
  • Import designs you want to use.
  • Estimate the size of patterns you want to make and set the size of your design accordingly in the design space.
  • Set the position on the mat, making sure to leave at least 2 inches of space all around the design.
  • Apply the stencil vinyl on the StandardGrip machine mat with the white side down and load it into the machine. Run the Cricut to cut the stencil.
  • Use a weeding tool to remove the part of the stencil where the paint will go.
  • Remove the blue stencil vinyl from the white backing, apply it to the wall, and add paint using a foam pouncer.
  • With the paint still wet, peel off the stencil. Apply the stencil again to the next location, paint, peel, and repeat!
  • Enjoy your custom crafts!

Monogrammed/Personalized Throw Pillows

Looking for the perfect holiday-themed pillow to kick up your festive decor game? Looking for a gift idea for mom or grandma to let them know that they’re #1? Maybe there’s a saying around your house that just needs to be memorialized in pillow-form. Whatever your idea, a Cricut machine can make it happen.

Cricut Ideas for Projects That Make Perfect Gifts

Baby Onesies

These make a great baby shower gift. A cute, well-designed onesie will get plenty of use. You could also make a mommy-and-me or daddy-and-me matching shirt/onesie set. My personal favorite is the set that says “the original” and “the remix.”

Personalized Coffee Mugs

You can never have enough mugs, right? Whether it’s a gift for Father’s Day (letting him know that he’s the World’s Best Dad, of course) or a mug to show off your own personal style, mugs are the essential container of our favorite morning beverage. If you plan on doing a lot of mug projects, consider purchasing a Cricut Mug Press.

The Cricut gift ideas are endless!

Personalized Blankets

Nothing makes a winter night cozier than a blanket, and when it’s personalized, you can make sure no one else gets their hands on your favorite cozy blanket.
