Meet Jenny

Jenny is an ER nurse, personal trainer, and group fitness instructor in Oahu, Hawaii. Her greatest joy comes from being a mother to 11-year-old Anya and 9-year-old twins Nikolaj and Natalia. She wants to inspire women at every stage of their motherhood journey to make health and fitness a  priority just like they do their little ones.

Athletic Beachy Style

Which three words best describe your style?

I love a wide range of clothes, and as a mom, I often go with comfy and sporty. My kids are each in a thousand sports, and I always want to keep up. However, I do love a feminine style for date nights and meeting up with girlfriends. Any time I can get really dressed up, I enjoy an elegant style. Getting dressed up in an embroidered, lace, or tulle dress is one of my favorite things to do. It always makes it more fun to do with my two little girls.

What are your favorite places to shop?

I love shopping and try to keep an open mind as I have found amazing pieces anywhere from Walmart to high-end boutiques. My current favorites would have to be Zara, H&M, Abercrombie, Nordstrom is always a sure thing, and I love Lululemon for activewear.

Who’s your favorite style icon?

I adore Blake Lively/Serena VanDerWoodsen’s style. They have differences, as I am well aware that Serena is a character, lol, but overall I love the trendy and chic style they both elude. Blake is 5’10, as am I, so to see styles on her that work is super helpful in choosing pieces for my wardrobe.

What article of clothing/accessory would you not want to live without?

I have been living in my mid-rise boyfriend jeans from Abercrombie. They go with everything and can be dressed up or down. Perfection!

Jenny’s Style Advice

What’s your best style advice?

Be confident in what you wear. You can look super cute, but if you feel uncomfortable or unsure of what you are wearing, it will totally show.

Which trend would you want to see make a comeback?

I really loved bell-bottom jeans when I was in high school. It was such a fun look and would be fun to see come back!

What should NEVER make a comeback?

I was never really a fan of overalls; some girls really wear them well. But overall (pun intended, haha!) I don’t think it’s a great look for most!

What fashion/style did you love at the time but now cringe when you see old photos?

So back to the overalls, and even worse, I would wear them with a cropped tube top under… totally cringe-worthy!

What’s your best style secret?

The best style secret would be to dress for your body type. I am very tall, so really short dresses don’t look great, but I have found slightly below the knee or shin-length midi dresses look best on my frame.

Stilettos or flats?

I’m 5’10, so I go for flats more often and could never really walk quickly in heels, so those are a no-go for me!

Athletic Beachy Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?

We live on Oahu, so going to the beach and the pool is a nearly daily activity for us. We even prefer to vacation in tropical places.

What’s been your best family vacation?

I actually have two favorite family vacations, both in 2018. In June, we went to Cabo and stayed at a gorgeous all-inclusive resort for 10 days, and in December, we went to Disneyland with my sister and our mom; it was incredible!

Best parenting advice:

Always lead with love. Simple but not always easy.

Parenting true confession:

I’ll bribe my kids with treats, but really I am the one with the biggest sweet tooth! I love anything sugary, especially candy, cake, cookies; I just can’t resist!

What’s your favorite family restaurant?

There is a super cute Thai restaurant by our house that we all love and order from for special occasions.

Athletic Beachy Work

Why did you decide on a career as a nurse?

I’ve always had a nurturing instinct and, from a young age, wanted to help others. I kind of fell into it when a college recruiter came to our high school and spoke of their excellent nursing school. I was sold and have been able to do so much in nursing; best decision!

What do you find rewarding about your job?

I love being there for people on what is often the worst day of their lives being an ER nurse. Also, I love hearing people’s stories, especially older patients who have had a lifetime of experiences – I find the journey that is each person’s life fascinating.

How do you balance being a nurse and a mom?

Balance would have to be the biggest challenge in my life right now. First off, I wake up at 3:30 am to work out and get things prepped for the day; I know it sounds crazy, but it works for me. I’m also in bed before 9 pm. I always have a running priority list in my head and have to let things that aren’t top on that list go.

How did you get into personal training and fitness?

Growing up, my sister and I were always in sports. Our parents gave us every opportunity to do many different activities, and if we didn’t like one, we would switch to another. Coming home after school and just watching TV was never an option – we were always doing sports; I have kept that mindset. One summer, a few friends and I had about 2 hours between summer school and cheer practice, and a 24-hour Fitness had just opened in the shopping center near our school. It was perfect for us to go there after summer school and before practice. Eventually, I started taking the group fitness classes and really loved that!

Athletic Beachy Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch? The Office! For sure, hilarious!

What song would you dance to when nobody’s watching? Anything by Kelly Clarkson! She is so soulful and sings with her whole heart; I love that!

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? Ireland and Prague. My Dad is full Irish, and I always thought it would be fun to see where his ancestors were from. Since Chris’ Dad is Czech, we have always wanted to go there as well, not to mention how beautiful it looks!

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? I love lying in bed and watching movies with the kids. Honestly, I don’t even care what movie it is; I just love getting all snuggled up with them.
