Meet Matt

I’m an Assistant Professor in the School of Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I study social media and sustainability campaigns and I love my job so so so much. I have two girls, a corgi, and a wife of 10 years.

Academic Bro Style

What three words describe your style? Majestic, academic, bro.

Where are your favorite places to shop? Bonobos, JCrew, Southern Tide (Intercoastal Collection for when it’s hot, but you want to dress nice)

Who’s your favorite style icon? Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society, but with happier colors.

What’s your best style advice? Have fun. Life is short, everybody is mostly worried about their own stuff so just wear whatever you want.

What trend did you love at the time, but now cringe when you see old photos?  Having an afro in the late ’90s.

What’s your Dad Superpower? Like the Hulk, but silly instead of angry. “Now would be a good time for you to get silly, Dad.” (That’s my secret, I’M ALWAYS SILLY)

Facial hair or clean-shaven? Always stubble for the lowest maintenance look possible….electric razor once a week for 30 seconds. Fantastic.

Academic Bro Family

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family? Playing outside

What’s been your best family vacation? Trips to Florida to see the in-laws – lots of water and beach time.

What’s your favorite family activity?  Cuddle/Tickle fights

Best Parenting Advice: Kids remember stuff. Don’t make promises you can’t deliver and always talk up your spouse when he or she isn’t around.

Parenting True Confession: Netflix occasionally spends more time with my girls than I do.

What’s your go-to family dinner? Quesadillas. Or anything nice for Mom and Dad, and a PB&J for the five-year-old, cause she’s not Gordon Ramsay. The baby gets pieces/leftovers from everyone’s meals cause, again,  she’s not gonna “complain”.

What’s your favorite family restaurant?  I’m gonna take a huge risk with FamilyApp target demo and say Chick Fil A.

Academic Bro Life

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch? Not true crime documentaries, like some psychos.

If you could pick anyone to star in a movie based on your life, who would it be?  Ian Ziering

What’s your favorite sport and why? It was surfing, but now I live in the mountains so maybe snowboarding.

What’s your favorite family dance party song?  LCD Soundsystem disco infiltrator

If you could hang out with anyone from history, living or deceased, who would it be? John Cacioppo

What’s at the top of your travel bucket list?  Bali

What’s your favorite way to unwind at the end of a long day? Bourbon or Kombucha

Your Academic Bro Style

We can’t decide whether it would be more fun to be in Matt’s living room or classroom! He takes being silly seriously with his family and enlivens interactions with his students all day long. We love how he has challenged any stiff, boring professor cliches and aligned his work with who he is, resulting in effective teaching and a life he believes in.
